Threw sixth no-hitter in Can-Am League history recently
DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners RHP Jamie Walczak (pictured) has been named Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 14.
Walczak made Can-Am League history on last Saturday night, tossing a seven-inning no hitter in a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Champions. His no-no was the first in the young history of the Miners, and the sixth all-time in the Can-Am League. Walczak threw the first no-hitter in the Can-Am League since Alex Szymanski of the Trois-Rivieres Aigles no-hit the New Jersey Jackals on July 25, 2014.In Saturday’s game, Walczak worked seven hitless, scoreless innings, surrendering two walks but striking out five. The victory was Walczak’s second on the season.Earlier in the week, the Painesville, Ohio resident made a start against the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association. In that Tuesday start, Walczak allowed four unearned runs on six hits over six innings. He walked a batter and struck out six as the Miners fell 4-1.

On the season, Walczak is now 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA in five starts. Over 28.1 innings, he has struck out 21 batters. This is his first season in the Can-Am League after six years in the Cincinnati Reds system. Playing with five different Reds affiliates, Walczak climbed as high as the Class AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League. His best season came in 2013, when he carried a 2.95 ERA over 32 combined games at Pensacola and the Class A Advanced Bakersfield Blaze of the California League. In 42.2 innings, Walczak struck out 54.

The Miners began a three-game series with the Shikoku Island League All-Stars. First pitch at Skylands Stadium.  That game, like all Can-Am League games, can be seen live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
