U.S. Embassy Supports
Dance Theatre of Harlem’s
Visit To Poland

The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw is proud to support the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem’s visit to Poland. The acclaimed New York-based dance company will perform at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw on November 16 and 17 as part of the 9th annual edition of the Days of Dance organized by the Polish National Ballet.

On November 20, the Dance Theatre of Harlem will travel to Wroclaw to perform at the National Forum of Music. While in Poland, members of the celebrated dance company will also conduct workshops for aspiring dancers.

Arthur Mitchell, the first African-American principal dancer in a major ballet company, founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969 in response to the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  In so doing, Mitchell created the first classical ballet school for the children of Harlem, a poor and predominantly black New York neighborhood where Mitchel himself was raised.

Since its inception, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural institution that continues to set standards in the performing arts worldwide.  The Dance Theatre of Harlem has achieved unprecedented success, bringing innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences across the United States and around the world.
