I am going to get right into it this month because we have a lot to talk about.
I hope everyone is having a great summer, doing everything that you want to do.
As summer was just getting started, Grand Rapids, MI hosted Kielbasa Idol, which took place at St. Adalbert Park. This event showcases all the area meat markets. The winner of this event was Sobie Meats from Grand Rapids, Michigan’s west side. One of the meat markets, The Top Butcher Shoppe, is located in Spring Lake, MI, the next town over where the Michigan Beat stays during the summer. The Michigan Beat has been to this meat market a few times. The store has great kielbasa and lots of other things for you to enjoy. Kielbasa Idol also included entertainment provided by Jerry Kaminski’s Polka Network.
As the weather warmed up in Michigan, so did the polka music at the St. Joseph Heritage Festival in Jackson, MI. Polka Bands who performed at the festival were the Diddle Styx from Grand Rapids, MI and the Dyna Brass from the east side of Michigan.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spring Lake, MI held their festival about three weeks ago. This festival included a great meal, music and lots more activity. There were many people at this festival that are also a part of the parish St. Patrick’s / St. Anthony’s in Grand Haven, Michigan where The Michigan Beat attends church during the summer. This parish’s festival was being held at the same time that this column was being written. The festival included a band playing variety music and polkas, and a rock band. There was also a dinner, rummage sale, car show, many activities for the kids and much more.
The 40th Anniversary Polka Fireworks also took place in July. This event was a lot of fun. There was a Concertina Jam Session, a pool party and a Polka Mass with Henny & The Versa J’s. This event always brings in many people.
