In Fontana, CA, Feb. 16-17
We (Gene Swick, Gail & I) hosted the Steve Drzewicki Band at the Sons of Italy Hall in Fontana the weekend of Feb. 16. This was their first appearance in California and they totally wowed the crowd. They are a fantastic Polish band, mixing in a bunch of Buck Owens music (Buck created lots of polkas) to the delight of everyone. It turns out that Steve Drzewicki is a Buck Owens aficionado, but he wasn’t aware that Buck’s son & the Buckaroos play with regularity at the Crystal Palace just up the road in Bakersfield, Ca. Gail & I had the pleasure of dancing to Buck & the Buckaroos a couple of times – whaa hooo! This band was inducted into the Michigan State Polka Hall of Fame in 2009. Yet most of the folks in California were unfamiliar with them and wondered how well they’d do. Well let me tell you, they blew the roof off. Everyone complimented us on getting this stellar group to come west. Saturday the music started, the dance floor filled up, and the band kicked it into gear. Stanley was in the zone on accordion. Steve was rocking on drums. Gary and Doug wowed us with trumpet. Gary brought us to our feet with his fiddle playing (there were a couple of memorably lightning fast numbers that set the place on fire). Bill bellow shook and shook and shook. Mark backed up on bass. The place was jumping. It was so good that no one wanted to leave. Sunday picked up where Saturday left off. Both nights ended with the entire room filling up the mosh pit in appreciation of the music.
