SNOB – S.NOB

The word for today is – SNOB – originally written – S.NOB – which was the abbreviation for – SINE NOBILITATE meaning WITHOUT NOBILITY. In medieval days just as today a person would write his educational or inherited title after his name, e.g. (exempli gratia – for the sake of example) – Jim Nasium, M.D. or James McDonnell, Ph.D., or Henry Nazarenus, R. (R = REX = KING). Those not having higher education or royal title would write – S.NOB after their name. Later on the period after the letter S was dropped and the word became SNOB. The cognos knew the real meaning of this word but the ignorant who did not know the Latin thought that it was some title. Upon discovering the truth many people considered this as pompous and pretentious. Hence we have this inference today that a SNOB is someone who thinks too highly of himself and pretends to be better educated or more royal than others.
