Secretary General Says NATO
Must Adapt To A Changing World

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stressed that NATO must “be prepared for the long haul” as it adapts to rising challenges from both the south and the east. In a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington D.C. on Wednesday (27 May 2015), Mr. Stoltenberg focused specifically on the challenge posed by “a resurgent Russia”.

Calling Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine “part of a disturbing pattern”, the Secretary General warned that Moscow’s actions have undermined European security principles, including respect for borders, the independence of states, and military transparency and predictability. In response, he underlined that NATO is reinforcing its collective defence, keeping channels of communication open with Russia, and supporting European partners. The Secretary General stressed that in a changing world, “one thing that will not change,” is NATO’s “determination to stand united.”
