Saying “No!” To Fake News

(December 28, 2016) – The Polish Press Agency (PAP), a state-owned news agency based in Warsaw, published fake news yesterday. It’s sad, but it happened. PAP disseminated blatant lies about Poland’s Committee for the Defense of Democracy (KOD) and its American supporters, without any form of balanced reporting or fact checking. A heretofore reputable news agency, PAP simply repeated false allegations that KOD and its U.S. sympathizers are terrorists who advocate the use of force in Poland and the United States. The PAP article has already been republished word for word by Polsat News and the Polish online portal onet.pl. Social media users have picked up on it and reshared the “news” hundreds of times.
PAP’s disinformation is based solely on one letter from a Polonia Institute, a little known new California-based Polish organization. It is a shame that PAP has so flagrantly violated professional standards of journalism. It is also sad to see Polsat and Onet repeating those lies, apparently for the sake of higher viewership statistics.
If Poland wants to defend itself from Russia’s hybrid warfare and disinformation campaigns, the Polish media — including private and state-owned media — must act more professionally than in this case. They may not sloppily reprint false information and must be free from political pressures from whichever party runs the government in a given term.
The Committee for the Defense of Democracy is a peaceful pro-democracy movement which opposes violations of the rule of law by Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party. While you may have seen reports about Poles engaging in civil disobedience outside of Poland’s parliament and under the Wawel Castle in Kraków, that is a far cry from terrorism. I am much more concerned about video footage showing how the ruling party used the Parliament’s police force (Straż Marszałkowska) to prevent opposition Members of Parliament from entering a hall where the country’s 2017 budget act was being considered and voted on.

We understand you recently published an article about the so-called Polonia Institute and its claim that KOD is a terrorist organization operating in the USA. In reality the Polonia Institute is a group of three elderly men from the outskirts of Los Angeles and they certainly do not represent the views of the broader Polish-American community. In fact, no one had heard of them prior to your article. KOD Polonia USA, which represents KOD in the United States, is made up of thousands of respected community members. That is why we have been able to meet multiple times with the Polish American Congress and its president Frank Spula. We are far from terrorists; indeed, we are usually the recipients of terroristic threats from people who support PiS. KOD Polonia USA also has excellent relationships with members of the legislative and executive branches of the United States government developed over the past year of peaceful advocacy for democracy in Poland. We are not concerned about the “Institute’s” threat to have us classified as a terrorist group, which only reflects their lack of familiarity with US law as well as the facts regarding our activities. In the future we are happy to provide comment on any story you consider publishing about KOD in the United States and we hope that you will research the facts more fully before publishing an article about the delusions of a few old men in California.
KOD Polonia USA chciałby ustosunkować się do artykułu opublikowanego ostatnio w serwisach PAP.pl i Onet.pl powołującego się na tekst podpisany przez tak zwany „Instytut Polonii”. W artykule tym KOD Polonia USA nazwany jest organizacją terrorystyczną operującą na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych. W rzeczywistości “Instytut Polonii” jest grupą założoną przez trzech starszych panów zamieszkałych na przedmieściach Los Angeles, którym daleko do bycia reprezentantami opinii szeroko rozumianej społeczności polsko-amerykanskiej. Co więcej, nikt przed opublikowaniem przez te serwisy nie słyszał o tym „Instytucie”.
KOD Polonia USA, reprezentant KODu na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych, to grupa skupiająca tysiące powszechnie szanowanych członków lokalnych społecznosci. Jako prawnie rozpoznawalny ruch społeczny spotykaliśmy się z Kongresem Polonii Amerykańskiej i jego prezesem Frankiem Spulą. Jesteśmy ruchem bardzo odległym od idei terroryzmu, w istocie to my jesteśmy często celem gróźb i zastraszania ze strony osób wspierających PiS.
KOD Polonia USA ma świetne stosunki z przedstawicielami władz ustawodawczych i wykonawczych rządu Stanów Zjednoczonych, które rozwinęliśmy w ciągu ubiegłego roku pokojowego wspierania demokracji w Polsce. Nie dotyczą zatem KODu Polonia USA groźby „Instytutu” zaklasyfikowania nas jako grupy terrorystycznej, ponieważ wskazują one na kompletny brak znajomości prawa amerykańskiego oraz naszej działalności. Jeśli serwis Onet lub PAP będzie publikować wiadomości dotyczące KOD Polonia USA, chętnie dostarczymy prawdziwych informacji na nasz temat. Mamy też nadzieję, że w przyszłości dokonacie bardziej dogłębnej analizy faktów zanim opublikujecie artykuł oparty na urojeniach kilku starszych panów z Kalifornii.
