RUDE

The word for today is RUDE which comes from the Latin word – RUDIS
meaning A WOODEN SWORD,
also, UNDEVELOPED, ROUGH, HARSH.

In the early stages of gladiator training a wooden sword was used. The undeveloped, unskilled gladiator in training, received some bruises but survived. The objective was to train without lethal injuries incurred. If a gladiator survived 500 combats he could have been retired. At the ceremony honoring such men, a wooden sword was presented. This was the golden watch for so many years of service to the entertainment world of the Romans.

The Latin word – RUDIS – comes into the English language as – RUDE, CRUDE, RUDIMENTARY.
