(Rochester, NY) June 17, 2016. On August 2, polka radio history will be made in Rochester as the host of The Polka Bandstand Show, Ray Serafin, celebrates 35 years on the air at Jazz90.1 WGMC-FM. The show, which first aired on August 2, 1981, has provided thousands of hours of polka music entertainment on the air in Rochester and world-wide on the internet.
Serafin “grew up with polka” in Rochester and remembers hearing polka music everywhere. Ray took up the accordion and put his first polka band together at age 15. He’s recorded several polka albums and formed the band, Brass Magic. Ray is an avid collector of polka recordings. His collection includes more than 7,000 albums.
The Polka Bandstand Show is co-hosted by Al Meilutis every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. The pair volunteer their time each week to host the program they love.
“For a radio host to be on the air that long in one market is a huge achievement,” said Station Manager Rob Linton. “It’s rare for such a niche musical format to have that kind of staying power and doing so is a testament to the knowledge and chemistry Ray and Al bring to The Polka Bandstand Show. We are very proud of their contributions to polka community over the past 35 years.”
Jazz90.1 will celebrate Ray’s anniversary with an open house and live broadcast of The Polka Bandstand Show from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 30 at the WGMC Studios – inside Olympia School, 1139 Maiden Lane, Rochester, NY. The event is free and open to the public.
