CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – The Polish Museum of America (PMA) had the great honor to host Mr. Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland, and Mrs. Agata Kornhauser-Duda, First Lady of the Republic of Poland, on Friday, May 18, 2018. The visit was part of the scheduled presidential tour of Chicago Polonia in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s regained independence.
President Duda and the First Lady were greeted by PMA President Richard Owsiany, PMA Chairman and Polish Roman Catholic Union of America (PRCUA) President Joseph A. Drobot, Jr., and PMA Managing Director Małgorzata Kot. The presidential couple toured the building with Mr. Owsiany and Mrs. Kot, and included visits to the PRCUA Boardroom, the PMA I.J. Paderewski Room, and the PMA Stephen and Elizabeth Ann Kusmierczak Art Gallery. Both the President and the First Lady were awed by the collections.
The visit concluded with remarks in the PMA Sabina P. Logisz Great Hall. President Duda stated the museum was a true jewel of Polonia, and presented the flag of the Republic of Poland to the PMA, which was graciously accepted by Mr. Owsiany. In attendance were members of the PMA Board of Directors, employees, and invited guests.
PMA President Owsiany commented: “Having the sitting Head of State of the Republic of Poland visit the Polish Museum of America is a confirmation of the importance of this institution, and a significant compliment to the work the PMA is committed to – ensuring that the historical treasures of our shared Polish and Polonian past remain relevant and accessible to today’s and future generations.”
President Andrzej Duda joins a long list of dignitaries who have visited the PMA and Library: I.J. Paderewski; Generals Władysław Sikorski and Józef Haller; United States Presidents Herbert Hoover and Barack Obama; Karol Cardinal Wojtyla; and many more American and Polish government officials, ambassadors, senators, congressmen, governors, and mayors.
