In Sacramento – Feb. 10th
Fred Mlakar performed at the Slovene Hall in San Francisco for PUST on Feb. 9. The Slovenian celebration of Carnival (PUST) precedes Lent, as does all of the ethnic versions of carnival. At the San Francisco event they forgo dressing up in wild costumes and simply get together for music in the bar(button accordion players jamming), chat, and dinner (blood sausage and potica), followed by polka dancing (the Mlakar Family Band). I’m not a lover of blood sausage (yes, I know yours is the best, but not for me). I prefer paczki (doughnuts) which are served up in the Polish Hall on Fat Thursday. We missed PUST (drat) – we have season tickets for the San Jose Sharks ice hockey team and they played at the same time.
The next day, the Polka Booster Club in Sacramento held their monthly dance where Polka Power performed. The theme was Valentine’s and nearly everyone was clad in red attire. The tables were laden with chocolate candies (thanks to Donna Seibert Clay) and hearts. We don’t get many toddlers, but KC and Inge Williams joined us with one of their foster children; KC’s mother was looking after the other. I don’t know how they do it – exhausting! I can backpack, ski, hike, dance, run – but taking care of toddlers at my age would wear me out.
