Polish Heritage Day In Los Angeles

The New Year began strong when on January 6 over a thousand Polish fans in red and white gathered at Staples Center in Los Angeles to take part in Polish Heritage Day and cheer for Marcin Gortat and the Clippers. Organized in cooperation with the Polish Consulate General in Los Angeles, the night was full of heart-warming Polish features.

The event began with the honoring of Polish War World II military veterans, who received LA Clipper No. 13 jerseys, Marcin Gortat’s number. The night also included a performance by cheerleaders from Gdynia, and throughout the event fans could try Polish food and enjoy Polish music. President of Poland Andrzej Duda sent a video message that was screened at halftime, in which he thanked Marcin Gortat for promoting Poland in the United States.

During the game the Clippers faced the Orlando Magic. The Clippers took the victory, with a final score of 106-96. Gortat himself scored eight points, with ten rebounds and six assists.

“Polish Heritage Day is a special day for me,” Gortat explained on court in a post-match interview. “Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for being with me,” he said to the Polish fans watching. This was the eighth edition of Polish Heritage Day. The first two were in Phoenix, while over the last five years Polish Heritage Day was held in Washington, DC.

Thank you to everyone who made this incredible event possible, and thank you Marcin for bringing the Polish community together and promoting Polish culture abroad! Your pride in your heritage is an inspiration!
