Fontana, CA Jan. 2013
Molly B & the Squeezebox band performed at the Sons of Italy Hall in Fontana, Ca. the first weekend in January. Gene Swick promoted the event, which drew the largest crowd we’ve seen in many years. At least 1/3 of the folk were not from the polka fan base, absolutely new to us. This is understandable, since the band is seen on their RFD-TV show and they play an enormous variety of music from multiple genres (Czech, German, Polish, Slovenian, American) and styles (polkas, country western, foxtrots, and more). The dance floor was filled both days. The band played the chicken dance much to the delight of the young folk (yup, there were a lot of youngsters) and the old folk (we know there were a lot of oldsters). Even the local polka musicians showed up for this event, including Papa Joe Mlakar who marveled at Mollie’s versatility. The local DJs – Skip Garvin and Tom Haslett – attended, gathering more material for their programs. Everyone was taken by Mollie’s charm and wanted their picture taken with her – which she obliged graciously and beautifully. The following weekend the band moved onto Mesa, Arizona drawing overflow crowds. Don’t miss this band if they’re in your area.
