Today’s word is MISTER which comes from the Latin word MAGISTER meaning – teacher. As the word evolved the letters AG were dropped, however, the word MAGISTRATE still retains all the LATIN letters. The Greek word for teacher is PEDAGOGUE which comes from PAIS meaning – child; and GOGUE meaning leader. In ancient Greece and Rome the tutor who generally was a slave would come to the house with a torch lighting up the way early in the morning and lead the children to school. Hence, a teacher or pedagogue is a leader of children. The word DEMOGOGUE comes from the Greek Demos meaning – people; and GOGUE meaning – leader. However, today it means TO MISLEAD THE PEOPLE, or TO LEAD THEM ASTRAY.
