“Miracle of the Bells” Program Planned

2_feb_scan0001r1PENNSYLVANIA – The Miracle of the Bells exhibit currently on display at the Luzerne County Historical Society Museum has been extended until September 27 and a program about the movie is planned for September 26. Historian, F. Charles Petrillo will present “A Behind the Scenes Look at The Miracle of the Bells” followed by a showing of an abridged version of the movie, Thursday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Osterhout Free Library, 71 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. The story of The Miracle of the Bells takes place in and around Nanticoke and Glen Lyon (Coaltown), as well as other places around the country. The movie, released by RKO Radio Pictures in 1948, stars Fred MacMurray, AlidaValli and Frank Sinatra. It was adapted from the book of the same name by Russell Janney, which was the number one bestselling book in the country in 1947. Both the movie and the book were released around the world.

The “real” Olga was from Glen Lyon, achieved success in show business (most notably as a Broadway and London producer along with Janney), died young and was brought home to be buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery. The exhibit explores the life and accomplishments of the “real” Olga, the making of the movie (some filming was done in Glen Lyon) and the movie itself.

The Luzerne County Historical Society Museum, located at 69 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, is open Tuesday through Friday, noon to 2 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission to the Museum is $4 for adults, $2 for children 6 to 12 and free for Historical Society members and children 5 and under. Admission to the Miracle of the Bells program on September 26 is free of charge.
