The Oakland Nature Friends is a German club (Die Naturfreunde) that resides on a couple of acres in the Oakland hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay with a beautiful clubhouse, bierstube, picnic area, and outside dance floor. For Maifest 2013 the Gruber Family Band performed to a very enthusiastic crowd of over 500 with an additional 50+ children to boot. People were spread out all across the dance floor and seating area, onto the hillside above the dance floor where the kid’s play area is. They even sold out all of their food. Thank God they had plenty of beer.
The Gruber Family Band played a wide variety of music from traditional German songs to Germanic Country Western and even a little Rock ‘n Roll. The crowd went crazy for them. The dance floor was hopping for 4 hours with a bonus of 40 minutes thanks to the band. Julie Uher, the club treasurer and longtime member, was crowned the Mai Queen by last year’s Queen, Eleanor Buchner. Julie was quite surprised and delighted as she accepted dance after dance from her loyal subjects. And the club’s Schuhplattler dance group performed several dances including the very special Mai Pole Dance.
The next major event in August will be just as packed when the Internationals play.
