Today’s word is LACONIC – which comes from – LACONIAN – a person from Lacedaemon, the name for the region of Greece of which Sparta was the capital. The Spartans, noted for being warlike and disciplined, were also known for the brevity of their speech. Today the word LACONIC means A PERSON WITH FEW WORDS. The Laconians were in danger of being invaded by the Athenians. When the Athenians threatened the Laconians by saying, “If we come to your city we shall destroy it” the Laconians simply replied “If”.
