Kaptur Introduces Legislation
To Strengthen Exchange
Between US and Poland
Following Tragic Murder of Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz,
Rep. Kaptur Introduces Legislation to Strengthen Democratic Exchange
Between the United States and Poland
Washington, D.C. (March 22, 2019) — Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), the longest serving woman in the United States Congress, senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Co-Chair of the Congressional Poland Caucus, today introduced the “Paweł Adamowicz Democratic Leadership Exchange Act of 2019”, which would establish increased democratic exchange between the United States and Poland.
The program would grant elected officials and civil society leaders from both countries the opportunity to travel to the partner nation for 1-2 weeks, participate in educational conferences, gain important leadership skills, and build transatlantic networks between the two NATO allies. These valuable experiences would further strengthen the historic partnership between the U.S. and Poland and equip participants with the relationships and experience necessary to enrich their home country’s democratic institutions upon their return home. Gdansk, Poland is the sister-city to Cleveland, OH.
“It is my honor to introduce this legislation to strengthen the democratic friendship between the United States and Poland. The tragic murder of Mayor Adamowicz serves as reminder of how precious liberty is.” said Rep. Kaptur.
“Mayor Adamowicz was a prominent voice for liberty in Poland, and he was proud that Gdansk served as a beacon for a free and democratic Europe. In the face of transatlantic challenges including from NATO’s eastern flank, we must work to foster cultural, educational and political partnerships between our freedom-loving nations and strengthen democratic institutions. This program will honor Mayor Adamowicz’s historic legacy by helping us accomplish that important mission.”
