Swiss Park is a dance hall in Newark, 30 miles south of San Francisco, built in the 1940s by the Aelpler Gruppe Swiss Club. The dance hall is a stunning, raised wood floor (great for dancing) building, with wonderful acoustics and ambience. Incorporated into the dance hall is a bar and food service, and the property has an outside picnic area where many Swiss events are held. Swiss Park stages polka dances a couple of times each month to complement the Swiss club events. On Sunday, June 9, the Internationals performed for a lively crowd. The Internationals very nicely modulate their music program to fit the audience – and this audience loves Swiss, German, Italian, and Latin dance music, which Bobby Maggiora serves up on his accordion accompanied by Jan Meere (Dutch), Stevie McGinnis (American), and Tom Casazza (Italian).
Check out http://www.swissparknewark.com for a list of all the events. We’ll join Joe Domitrowich on August 4, as well as other venues with Karl Lebherz.
The Internationals play regularly at Teskes Germania Restaurant in San Jose, which I chronicle often. That venue is near the university in San Jose and gets a young crowd especially during Oktoberfest season. So expect more singing and rollicking than dancing at Teskes during Oktoberfest season. The Internationals will be hosting a cruise to Alaska in June of 2013 – contact them if you’re interested.
