Honor A Veteran

CLIFTON, NJ – Five times a year, volunteers raise 1710 flags throughout the grounds of  the Clifton Municipal Complex. It is a sight to take your breath away as they billow in the breeze.

Citizens can honor a veteran by purchasing flag for his or her birthday, or any special occasion. This is a wonderful tribute for their service. The cost of $110.00 is for the flag, pole, sleeve, name plate and ground socket.

If you do not have someone to honor, but would like to support the Avenue of Flags, a campaign is in place to honor all the KIA listed on the monument in Main Memorial Park with a flag. Since the families of these heroes  have passed on, there isn’t anyone to honor them with this tribute. It is the hope of the Avenue of Flags committee that generous citizens will purchase a flag in their memory.

To honor someone, a form must be completed and returned to City Hall. Visit www.cliftonnj.org click on LINKS and then click on Avenue of Flags. All the needed information is on the site and the form can be downloaded as well.

Flags are displayed on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Patriots Day (911) and Veterans Day. Please visit the site above for the set up and take down times.

We always can use extra hands to raise and lower the 1710 flags. If interested in volunteering, please call John Biegel Jr. at 973 519-0858. Come join us and we guarantee you will get an overwhelmingly good feeling for being a part of honoring those who served our country. Our next raising is Friday 9/11/15 at 6 AM and we lower them at 6:30 PM.

Volunteers are also needed to do the behind the scenes preparation work that gives us this beautiful display. Flags must be put together, caps painted, and the grounds generally maintained. The beautiful display would not be possible without the upkeep of the flags, poles, caps, trolley carts and general up-keep of the flag areas. If you can spare some time and can help in this area, please contact John Biegel Jr. at 973 519-0858.
