The Gruber Family Band (GFB) got the house jumping on July 20th at Teske’s Germania Restaurant in San Jose. The band set up in the outside patio which seats about 100 for dining and a small dance floor (linoleum) which is quite capable of accommodating 20+ people. Peter Gruber, a mechanical engineer, had just stepped off the plane from China where he helps firms design solar systems using his company’s framing and mounting brackets. Despite his jet lag he never missed a beat.
We started off with a small crowd and wound up the night with a nearly full patio. Summertime is the slow time at Teske’s, since the nearby university students who usually populate the place are on gone for the summer. On this evening, we had a couple of families celebrating birthdays with little kids marveling at the musicians and enjoying the goings-on. Martin Kramer, son of Toni Gruber Kramer, got everyone up and moving with the German Cowboy and Indian song, which is a group participation song, where everyone mimics Martin doing western movements (riding a horse, lassoing a cow, etc.) – a strange composition but the group loved it.
