CLIFTON, NJ – On Friday, August 21st through Saturday, August 22nd the Clifton Recreation Department hosted their award winning Family Campout at Albion Park. 313 people and 31 volunteers attended this event with their families. Upon arrival, the families were assigned to campsites on the field and received a welcome package. After getting settled in, the families enjoyed a barbeque dinner of hot dogs, hamburgers, vegetables, baked beans, fruit salad, chips, drinks and much more. As the volunteers prepared the campfire site and cleaned up from dinner, the families participated in playing family volleyball, wiffle ball, story time and bug exploration. Families also had varieties of board games and sports equipment provide by the recreation to use throughout the night and next morning. After nightfall, a campfire was set aflame as the families gathered around for familiar folk songs around the campfire led by Pastor Mike Weber. Following the singing, the participants roasted marshmallows and combined them with chocolate on a graham cracker to make s’mores, a traditional camping treat.
After sleeping beneath the stars, the families woke up early the next morning to a slight chill in the air. A hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, oatmeal, hash browns, hot chocolate, cereal and more, really hit the spot. Many participants followed breakfast with an exciting morning of hiking and fishing at Barbers Pond at Garrett Mountain. Other families participated in outdoor cooking and camp craft classes. This year’s theme was the “Stop Bugging Me”. The purpose of the event was to expose residents to the outdoors, give them an opportunity to try something new, spend time together as a family and create a love for nature.
The event would not have been successful without the support, time and dedication of the many volunteers throughout the community. The Clifton Recreation Department would like to thank these volunteers, especially the Clifton Special Police Law Enforcement Officers Association. The event was sponsored by C.A.S.A (Clifton Against Substance Abuse), Clifton Board of Education, Clifton Department of Public Works, Clifton Special Police, Clifton Fire Department, Clifton Midget League, Jim Janisheski – Janek’s Meat Market, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Cups of Clifton, Uno Chicago Grill of Clifton, Tick Tock Diner, The Allwood Diner, Clifton Health Department, Costco, IHOP-Clifton, The Hot Grill, ShopRite of Passaic/Clifton, The New Corral, Corrado’s, Garden Palace Lanes.
