The Romans loved wine. They often sweetened the wine with honey. When traveling across hot deserts they kept their water potable by mixing wine with the water. The word for wine cup in Latin is – EBRIUS. We get two common words from the word for cup. SOBER – comes from – SO (se) – which means – APART. Therefore, SOBER, means to be apart from the cup. INEBRIATED – on the other hand means to be – IN THE CUP. INEBRIATE means to be under the influence of alcohol.
