Crazy Horse Memorial 2nd Annual Autumn
Volksmarch September 28 & 29, 2014
Crazy Horse, SD -The public is invited to join Crazy Horse Memorial for the 2nd annual Autumn Volksmarch September 28 and 29, 2014. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Crazy Horse face-to-face. The Memorial gates open by 6 a.m. However, hikers start their walk between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day and the Laughing Water Restaurant will serve breakfast 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. on Volksmarch mornings.
This is the second time only each year the public may hike to the arm of the Mountain Carving. The Volksmarch traditionally is also offered the first full weekend in June. The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is a 10K or 6.2-mile hike roundtrip. The hike averages two to four hours to complete. Hikers should pace themselves due to the terrain and peak elevation (nearly 6,500 feet above sea level).
Admission is waived to the Memorial for hikers making a donation of three cans of food per person to the KOTA Care & Share Food Drive. Hikers are welcome to visit the large Crazy Horse Memorial visitor complex without charge. The American Volkssport Association (AVA) hike fee is $3 for each participant regardless of age. A special medal, commemorative shirt and official AVA hike credits are available for an additional charge.
There is no parking fee at Crazy Horse. However, due to the event’s popularity, parking can be some distance from the starting point and not on paved or gravel surfaces. Free shuttle buses will be available.
