FILM: A Pole and a Ukrainian In Auschwitz

FILM_The_RunawaysforwebMarek Pawlowski’s film, The Runaway will be shown on Friday, September 27 at 7:00 pm at the Ukrainian Institute of America – 2 E. 79th Street, New York, NY. The storyline concentrates on the friendship between two prisoners – a Pole and a Ukrainian, who develop a unique friendship forged by resistance to the Nazis in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Their daring escape, disguised as German officers in the commander’s personal car, set an example that inspired thousands of prisoners who stayed behind. The screening will be introduced by Alexander Motyl, a professor of political science at Rutgers University-Newark. Polish Films in Manhattan

Polish Filmmakers NYC will present two films by Maciej Cuske – the award-winning Old Bookstore and Remember the Sabbath Day will be held on Thursday, September 26 at the Tribeca Film Center, 375 Greenwich St. in Manhattan.

7:00 pm – Old Bookstore is a portrait of a small Warsaw establishment run by its aloof and chatty proprietor

7:45 pm – Remember the Sabbath Day was made as a part of a larger project, Decalogue… After the Decalogue, which examined the ways in which religious beliefs and practices of Polish people have changed in the new century.

Art Reactions to Superstorm Sandy

A new group exhibition featuring artwork by 14 Brooklyn-based artists commemorating the 1st anniversary of Sandy entitled For & About will be shown at the BAC Gallery – 111 Front Street, Suite 218, Brooklyn on September 27 – February 14, 2014; Opening Reception September 27, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The exhibition includes work made for those who were and continue to be affected by the aftermath of the storm, and art made about the storm and its impact.
