WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 5th Annual Polish Heritage Night with Marcin Gortat and the Washington Wizards was a tremendous success! Close to 1,000 Polish packed Capital One Arena to cheer on Marcin Gortat and the Washington Wizards to victory over the New York Nets on Saturday, January 13. Among the many Polish attractions prepared for wizards fans included custom made Polish Heritage Night miniature basketballs, Polish husaria hats, special performances by cheerleaders from Gdynia and much more. Special guests for the evening included Minister Anna Maria Anders, Plenipotentiary for International Dialogue, World War II veteran of the Battle of Monte Cassino, Major Wincenty Knapczyk and his wife Helena, as well as Polish veterans from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan Command Sergeant Major Piotr Maciejewski and Corporal Michal Packo. The entire arena had an opportunity to watch a special recorded address from the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda at halftime, and a spot prepared by the Polish Trade and Investment Section in Washington, DC entitled “Indestructible” which showcased Colonel Romuald Lipinski, a veteran of the Battle of Monte Cassino. The game was followed by a meet and greet with Marcin Gortat and his special guests, including Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus, which gave Polish fans an opportunity to receive autographs and meet with the Polish NBA star.
