The Gruber Family Band (GFB) provided a stellar performance at the Germania Verein in San Jose, Ca. on New Year’s Eve. The club is the second oldest German club in California, dating back to 1856. The hall is a beautiful building in downtown San Jose, which was renovated following a fire in 1999. A small contingent came from the Placerville German Club (160 miles northeast of San Jose) who are ardent GFB fans joined us. The hall was packed (slightly over 100) with energetic members who kept the dance floor well occupied. GFB knows the audience, mixing a shovel full of German tunes with a spoonful of other stuff, all of which was well received. The evening started with a few drinks followed by an excellent dinner prepared by the in-house caterer (Mona Lisa). Martin Kramer led us in a couple of audience participation numbers (the German Cowboy and Indian song, a snaking Conga line, and more). Everyone hit the floor for these numbers.
GFB mixed in a couple of line dances and Paul Joneses – all of which delighted the crowd. Gail & I are getting older, so when the clock struck 12, we kissed and left. So what does GFB do to unwind from these long night events? Bowling! There’s a bowling alley near their hotel and that’s where they go at 2 am. They invited us to join them, but they are too wild and crazy for us!
